Mr John Murphy


Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, Manchester, UK

Mr. Murphy graduated from the University of Liverpool Medical School in 2000, commencing his career in Surgery in 2001 and has worked in Breast Surgery since 2003. He is an NHS Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon, working at the Nightingale Breast Centre, Manchester University Hospital NHS Trusts, one of the largest Specialist Breast Units in Europe (treating over 1250 cancers per annum). During his training, he completed prestigious National Fellowships in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery and Cosmetic Reconstructive Surgery as well as completing a period of research culminating in the award of a PhD. During his training he has authored numerous high impact research papers and presented his work at many national and international conferences. His specialist area is breast cancer surgery, breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast surgery focussing on surgical excellence, improving outcomes in breast surgery as well as innovations in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. He is also actively involved in the training and teaching of medical students as well as trainee breast and plastic surgeons. He is a tutor on the Masters in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Course, as well as several practical courses run by the Royal College of Surgeons of England on topics such as Pre-pectoral Breast Reconstruction and partial Breast Reconstruction using local perforator flaps. He has been an invited speaker on many National and International conferences and has published over 100 articles during his career as well as book chapters. He also regularly reviews articles for well-respected journals in the fields of Breast oncoplastic and plastic Surgery. Within his role at the Nightingale Centre, he also actively recruits patients for National and International multicentre studies collaborating with colleagues to further improve outcome in Breast patients. He is also a principle Investigator in Local and Multicentre studies on a variety of subjects within the field. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, going to the gym as well as jogging regularly and watching the local football teams. He is always willing to engage, discuss new ideas and possible collaborations to further enhance patient outcomes in the future.
